Calling all artists! Take Art
/ Leave Art is a collaborative AVA exhibition that asks participants to
donate as much work as they wish to have displayed, appreciated, and
potentially taken away. We encourage submissions from all areas of
expertise—nothing is too good, too bad, or too weird. If you have a
really nice painting that you would like to give us, that's great, but
we also want your sketches and doodles. It’s not about being the best or
the worst, it's about being a part of an artistic community. All
submissions will be shown, and when the exhibition is over you will get a
goodie bag of art to pay you back for your work. You can even create
art at the reception and hang it up! Don't miss this unique artist
event.

Charlie Newton Exhibition
Dec.
14, 2009 - Feb. 28, 2010
North River Civic Center, 1009 Executive
Drive, Hixson, TN
The heavily impasto oil and acrylic paintings of
Charlie Newton will be featured at the North River Civic Center. Mr.
Newton states, "I am making paintings that psychologically de-construct
the diaspora for me producing imagery that appears fractured as well as
frenetic. The support consists of found and created objects organized
in such a way as to imply ritual and spirituality. Color and brush
stroke create passages throughout the surface and composition.
Psychological content is established via the organization of geometric
shapes and designs, which I refer to as ‘cultural chips’. These chips
are condensed archetypes that are historical, sometimes personal but
always universal in nature. The figure, be it human or not, creates an
open dialogue about spirituality and emotion. Each painting is a
meditation, or prayer - and speaks to the prophetic in art." For more
information, contact Linda Rugina at 423.870.8924 or 423.870.8045. The
center is open Mon-Sat.

Artist Brent Funderburk uses a combination of watercolor and acrylic in

reflection of nature. The functional pottery of ceramic artist Emily
Reason maintains her devotion to quality craftsmanship along with visual
and tactile beauty. Gallery hours: Mon-Sat 10am-5pm, Sun 1-5pm & by

AFFT / Chattanooga Film Commission Joint Meeting
Feb. 9, 6pm
Choo Choo Centennial Theater, 1400 Market St., Chattanooga
The general public and the creative community of Chattanooga is invited to the next AFFT meeting where the results of a months-long film visioning process will be announced. Last November a public film visioning process was launched to ask the question: “How can we build and sustain a viable film culture in Chattanooga?” At our initial meeting, over eighty attendees broke into small working groups to begin answering this question. Three months and several follow-up meetings later, over 150 citizens have contributed to this process – a mix of filmmakers and film lovers. The result of their collective input is a list of six film initiatives which will be unveiled to the public for the first time. Immediately following will be a panel discussion with representatives from leading local arts agencies on how to best implement the initiatives. Among those represented on the panel will be Create Here, the Arts and Education Council, the Association for Visual Arts (AVA), Allied Arts, the City’s Department of Education, Arts and Culture and the Chattanooga Writer’s Guild.
