The Gifted Eye of Charles Eames

An exhibition of 100 rarely
seen images from the Eames family collection. Charles Eames, together
with his wife and design partner, Ray Eames, are among the most
influential American designers of the 20th Century. They are best known
for their groundbreaking contributions to furniture design,
architecture, industrial design and manufacturing, textiles, and the
photographic arts. Smart Furniture will host a reception for the exhibit
which will feature a presentation by Eames Demetrios, principal of the
Eames Office and grandson of Charles and Ray Eames. For more

Cress Gallery of Art, 752 Vine Street, Chattanooga
This exhibition in
the Cress Gallery of Art features work from two of Nicholas Kahn and
Richard Selesnick’s multi-year photographic projects: The Apollo
Prophesies (2006) and Eisbergfreistadt (2010). Both projects are
whimsical yet topical elaborations upon actual events of history:
respectively, the 1969 NASA Apollo Lunar Mission; and the 1923 arrival
of an iceberg on the shore of the German port city of Lubeck. The
exhibition will include photographs, panoramic photographs, video,
objects, sculpture, costume, and ephemera all created by the artists,
along with documentary video of their process. Free and open to the

Both Daniel Liam Gill and
Sandra Shannon will be displaying their works this month. Daniel will
be showing his colorful abstracts that exhibits his "balloon"
technique. His figurative drawings are done either in pastel or with
oil paints, and some with an unusual twist. Sandra will showing her
free-form wire wrapping pendants made with mostly natural gemstones.
One of her pieces was worn to last year's Emmy's nomination event in Los

Our March exhibiting artists explore
the depths of narrative and the human condition. Fiber artist Martha
Beadle utilizes her skills in needlework to express her love for poetry
and art. Her result is wildly colorful, intricate creations anchored by
a quotation or line of poetry. The hand-built figures of clay artist
Becky Gray evoke a quiet contemplation of the human experience. Her
work blends subjects of man and nature into a working dialogue. Gallery

Slide Scanning Workshop (2

This workshop will allow participants to breathe new
life into their antiquated slides by demonstrating how to properly scan
both negative and positive film images to produce a usable high-quality

Murrini Glass Magnet Workshop

weather's too cold for the spring flowers to bloom, our glass versions
know no season. Watch Ignis owner Chris Mosey stretch hot glass and then
break it into small pieces called "murrini." After the demo, kids will
be able to arrange cold pieces of murrini into their own designs and
place them into the kiln, where the glass will fuse together under high
temperatures. Perfect for kids 5 and up who'd like to learn more about
glass art and have a chance to work with the material in a safe

This 5-week class will introduce beginning Web
enthusiasts to the pillars of Web design, using Adobe Dreamweaver CS3.
The course will cover the development and proper use of cascading style
sheets to create a design structure, formatting of elements with CSS,
image preparation and optimization, hyperlinking, incorporating text
into a design, file management, and simple HTML coding. Students will be
encouraged to develop and work on a design of their own throughout the
course. $145 AVA Members /

Adobe Illustrator is used
widely by graphic designers to create logos and other artwork for
printing and Web use. This introductory class will provide students with
the skills necessary to successfully explore the wide range of

will learn to create vector drawings, work with type and glyphs, and
utilize paths and filters. $125 AVA Members /

Glass/Hunter Museum
Join the Hunter Museum of American Art, AVA and
Ignis Glass for this innovative workshop, taught by Bruce Benefiled
& Juanita Tumelaire. The workshop includes a Friday evening private
tour of the Hunter Museum with curator of education, Adera Causey, which
will focus on prints in the museum’s collection. On Saturday,
participants will work in Ignis’ hot shop to develop a glass plate using
a sandblasting method. Participants will return to the Hunter Museum on
Sunday to run their plates through the traditional printing press. All
supplies for this workshop are included in the registration fee.
Participants will walk away with 4-8 limited edition prints on paper and
their glass plate. Two sessions are available--morning or afternoon. $120 AVA or
Hunter Museum Members.

AVA, in cooperation with the University of
Tennessee at Chattanooga, presents a 5-week intaglio printmaking class
for beginning and intermediate students, taught by Juantia Tumelaire.
This class is designed to teach participants how to apply traditional
etching techniques to create a sequence of related prints. These could
take the form of book pages or comprise a portfolio. Students will
receive a materials list, and a fee payable to the instructor will cover
etching plates and proofing paper. $125

non-instructional Figure Drawing Session. A live model will be posing in
fifteen 1-minute gestures, three 5-minute sketches and one 15-minute
pose. Three 30-minute poses will follow with breaks in between for the
model. Cost: $10.00 per person. Please provide your own materials and

amongst artists of intent, which are encouraged to share their
passionate visions and find fellow artists of like minds, hopefully
developing a common ground for an exciting interaction and meaningful
