PAST ART SPEAK EVENTS

Art:21 Season 5 / "Systems" (film screening)
Art:21 Program 4: Julie Mehretu, John Baldessari, Kimsooja, and Allan McCollum
Systems, the fourth program of season 5 from Art:21, focuses on artists who realize complex projects, whether through acts of appropriation, accumulation, living as an artist-nomad, or creating projects so vast in scope as to elude comprehension. This film explores how artists use systems and how artists invent new grammars and logics in today’s supercharged, information-based society. Art:21 Systems will premiere on PBS Wednesday, October 28 at 10 p.m. AVA and co-presenting sponsor WTCI will host an advanced screening.
Wednesday, October 21, 2009, 5:30-7pm

Art:21 Season 5 / "Transformation" (film screening)
Art:21 Program 3: Yinka Shonibare MBE, Cindy Sherman, and Paul McCarthy
Transformation, the third program of the award winning PBS Art:21 series, poses the questions of what strategies do we use to refashion identity and do we seek extremes in order to see ourselves more clearly? The artists in this episode populate their work with dolls, mannequins, and their own and others’ bodies in ambiguous narratives. Whether observing and satirizing society or reinventing icons of literature, art history and popular culture, these artists inhabit the characters they create and capture the sensibilities of our age. Art:21 Transformation will premiere on PBS Wednesday, October 21 at 10 p.m. AVA and co-presenting sponsor WTCI will host an advanced screening.

Time as Art: Cameras, Metronomes, and FAX Machines
Although the term "Time Based Art" is a more recent development, the practice is not and includes those works, which are dependent on time itself for the maturation or completion of the experience. This talk and discussion, led by Phillip Lewis, will focus on works that not only involve time in its processes, but also tend to focus on the measuring of that time as it's primary concern. Although film and video are most commonly associated with time-based media, we will survey works in sound, web, installation, photographic media and sculpture to explore the potential and complexity of time concepts and cross-disciplinary approaches.
