AVA’s Director of Programs, Mark Bradley-Shoup, offers free consultation for any AVA member who is a beginning or emerging artist. This free service covers basic tips on writing a resume and artist’s statement and preparing basic portfolio presentations, as well as assistance with finding the right exhibition opportunities for your work.  In addition to this free one-on-one service, AVA offers an on-going series of affordable workshops designed to help artists in develop the necessary skills needed to navigate the business angle of being a successful artist. Workshop topics include in-depth discussions and analysis on framing work, installation, shipping work, artist statements, grant writing, slide documentation and other related topics.

Packets & Portfolio
The ability to create a concise and effective portfolio remains central to the success of any artist. Whether you are approaching perspective galleries or clients, entering a juried competition, or simply seeking feedback from peers, this workshop introduces participants to the common mistakes that should be avoided along with the crucial tips necessary to create an effective portfolio packet.

Legal Issues for Artists
Learn how to protect yourself from unwanted legal issues and learn how to make the law work for you. This informal legal workshop for artists focuses on legal situations that are intrinsic to the careers of the working professional artist. Issues that are to be addressed include copyright laws, intellectual property, insurance, contractual agreements, and liability.

Grant Writing
Grants are constantly sought after by artists, but rarely acquired. This workshop is designed to provide artists with practical approaches to the research, design, format, and writing skills required for the development of effective grant proposals.
